Sometimes, it’s just fun to dress up your table.
I’m cooking tonight for the first time with the new Calphalon pots and pans that Ed gave me for Christmas. I was so surprised and touched by the gift that I wrote a whole soppy post about them! :) But as with anything new, I’m slowly learning a few things about my pots.
1. The “dishwasher safe” feature only works if you occasionally empty your dishwasher.
2. Brand new pans are thicker than the threadbare pans you’ve been using for more than 10 years. You can either turn up the heat a bit or take half an hour to brown a pound of ground meat. Your choice, but the husband and kids are hungry.
3. The husband may make googly eyes at you when he comes downstairs and sees that you’ve used your Christmas present for the first time.
I really like my new pots and pans. They were the perfect gift. Did you get anything great for Christmas this year?
Several years ago, I saw a picture in a magazine (Southern Living, maybe) in the December issue showing a dining room table with a couple of ornaments hanging from the light fixture. I liked the idea, but being from Texas, I thought the vision just needed more. So I went with dozens of ornaments! And, I figured out how to do it cheaply. (Eventually.) Real ribbon looks pretty, but I never could find a spool with more than 9 feet on it and buying enough to do a full set can get expensive. Red curling ribbon which is readily available at Christmas is cheap, comes in outrageous lengths, and works really well for this little project. I took 3 foot lengths of ribbon and tied an ornament to each end. The first time I did this, it took FOREVER!! But this year when I put it up this year, it took me all of 15 minutes to do 2 light fixtures! (more…)
